It’s really getting hot here in Dubai, and sunburn is a common symptom – specially amongst those of us who like to spend time on the beach or who have prolonged exposure to the hot sun.

Prevention is the best way to avoid sunburn. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest hours of the day. Wearing thin clothing that covers your skin, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat is always good precaution. If your body is going to be exposed to the sun, put on sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading into the sun, ensuring it's at least SPF 30.

If, however, you do get sun burned, aloe vera is always good for the skin. You can sooth inflammation to make your skin more comfortable. Here are some simple home remedies…

Help in your kitchen: Yogurt and cooled-down oatmeal contain helpful anti-inflammatory agents. Boil lettuce in water, then strain it and refrigerate it for a few hours before pressing it against your skin.

Tea. Soak two bags in cool water, and then apply them to sore spots. Tea contains tannic acid, which helps ease pain.

Honey. Research says it helps heal wounds, and applying some to your sunburn encourages the growth of new skin cells. Honey also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Milk. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe a sunburn. Pour it into a bowl and add several ice cubes; soak a washcloth in the mixture to create a compress. When it beings to feel warm against your skin, dip it back in the bowl so it cools down, then reapply.

Ice packs. Wrap a damp cloth around an ice-pack and hold it over your sunburn. What’s important is to cool the over-exposed, inflamed skin

Shaving cream. It's packed with menthol and other chemicals that double as natural cooling agents. It evaporates quickly and will remove some of the heat that radiates from sunburn, so slather it on your red spots.

Moisturizer. Everyday moisturizer helps soothe pain and swelling.

It’s important to control the problem. Avoid fragrant bubble baths, soaps, colognes, and perfumes—they could dry and further irritate your skin. Hot water in your shower increases blood flow, causing increased inflammation. Don't rub or peel sunburned skin. Stay out of the sun until your burn is fully healed. Sunburned skin is more susceptible to harmful UV rays.

Though sunburns are uncomfortable, they typically don't require medical attention.
