What is Asthma???

Asthma is a chronic illness marked by wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest and being short of breath.

Asthma is a chronic illness marked by wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest and being short of breath. Any of the symptoms below can be a sign of asthma:

• Coughing when exercising or after exercise

• Out of breath or shortness of breath

• A tight feeling in the chest

• Wheezing when breathing

At iCARE Clinics in Dubai, you could speak to an Internal Medicine specialist or GP about these conditions. Sometimes you may need to be referred to a specialist allergist.

The symptoms of asthma are usually caused when the muscles in your airways are tightened (constricted) and inflamed. Constriction and inflammation of the airways and increased mucous make it difficult to breathe.??

What causes Asthma?

Allergens, irritants, respiratory infections and often, exercise can trigger asthma symptoms. There are different kinds of asthma.

Seasonal asthma is common and is usually triggered by reactions to allergens - trees, grasses or weeds which are prevalent during seasonal changes. ??Allergic asthma is triggered by sensitivity to a set of allergens - pet dander, dust or mold or pollen in the air.

Some people suffer from a form of non-allergic asthma which is caused by irritants in the air that you breathe.  Tobacco and other types of smoke, wood polish, room deodorizers, aroma therapy candles, incense, fresh paint etc are all irritants. Exercise-induced asthma is triggered by exercise or physical action. ??Before you visit a doctor, it’s important to recognize what triggers your asthma symptoms.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic problems during childhood. Asthma symptoms in children are often not recognized early enough by parents, who believe their child has a persistent cough. But asthma symptoms are quickly recognized by doctors. Children have smaller airways than adults, which makes asthma especially serious for them. Children with asthma may experience wheezing, coughing, have problems breathing, and feel tightness in their chests. Please make sure you see a doctor as soon as you recognize these symptoms.
